Last night while updating his mother on Spencer, Greg made a remark that Spencer was lucky to be first-world dog. I suppose he’s right. Spencer not only has enough to eat, but it’s nutritious and well-balanced. He has a roof over his head. He has health insurance. Actually he’s better off than a lot of people in developed countries.
One of the things that makes us roll our eyes at ourselves is that Spencer is now on a treatment of essential oil drops to help reduce his stress. This may sound a little wacky, but many drugs are derived from plants, so it made sense to try this less concentrated and cheaper route before going down the pharmaceutical road ( yes, doggie anti-anxiety medication is a booming business).
A few years ago, I went to see the pharmacist for help with insomnia. I explained that I was hesitant to take sleeping pills because I didn’t want to wake up with a hangover. He suggested a combination of Valerian and Aubepine. They did the trick, and now whenever stress starts to interrupt my sleep, I take them for a few days and am as good as new. Incidentally, the French are world champions in the consumption of medical drugs and plant- based soft medicines (phyto-therapy). But I digress.
Anyway, Spencer has just started taking his drops, so it’s too early to tell if they’re helping. Stay tuned!
